Many people are curious and have questions about 911. How long has it been in use?, Where did it originate?, How were the numbers 911 chosen?
Approximately 40 years ago, it was determined there was a need for a standard, easy to remember telephone number that could be used to quickly connect people with police, fire or ambulance emergency services. 911 was selected and can be dialled free of charge from any telephone.
Unfortunately, the system and police are often overburdened by people who use 911 for non-emergency matters; make prank 911 calls or accidental activation of the 911 system. These can place a strain on police resources as officers respond to all 911 calls. The Leamington Police Services receives approximately ten of these 911 calls a day.

When should I call 911?
For any type of immediate emergency such as fires, a medical situation (someone not breathing, heart attack) or witnessing any crime in progress (break and enter, assault, theft of a vehicle, motor vehicle collision, etc.)
How is my call handled?
Once you dial 911, your call is answered at an Emergency 911 call centre where they confirm the origin of the call and what the emergency is. It is then re-routed to the appropriate dispatch center. Police related 911 calls for incidents occurring in Leamington are placed on a high priority and dispatched by Leamington dispatchers allowing police to respond immediately. Leamington Police dispatchers handle local 911 Fire calls locally also.
Educate your children
It is very important to maintain the integrity of the 911 system and that everyone knows how and when to use it. Parents should take the time to instruct their children in the proper use of the 911 system.
What do I do if I accidentally dial 911?
- Do not hang up.
- Stay on the line and advise the dispatcher that 911 was dialled by mistake.
- Be prepared to answer any inquiries that the dispatcher will ask.
911 should not be included on your telephone speed dial as this invites accidental activation.
