Many times, the victims of crime, or those who have been involved in a serious accident or have to deal with the loss of a loved one, need some sort of emotional support to help them through a traumatic situation.
Victim Services of Windsor and Essex County is a non-profit organization that was established to assist police in meeting the needs of victims, providing emotional support, information and referrals in the immediate aftermath of a crisis.
There are many different reactions to traumatic events. Some people have feelings of anger, sadness, emotional mistrust and fear. Others experience lack of enjoyment for everyday activities and have repeated thoughts or memories of the event. Feelings of isolation, nightmares, inability to sleep, lack of energy, chronic fatigue and decline in emotional health are common reactions. You may experience some or all of these types of reactions with varying degree. Hopefully, they will diminish with time and support.
What can Victim Services Do?
When police deal with serious occurrences where it is obvious that a victim has or may experience some sort of trauma, we will contact Victim Services. We advise them of the event and request that they meet with the victim either at the scene or at another location. Victim Services is available 24 hours a day and will attend whenever police make a request, however, victims can call during regular business hours where they will be directed to appropriate community agencies who can provide professional assistance.
Victim Services are not counsellors, but rather helpers who are available to listen to your concerns and assist by discussing the event with you and to put you in touch with caring people who will be available to help. They provide you with information regarding crime prevention strategies, the investigation and the judicial process.
