Leamington Council met electronically on April 14, 2020 and discussed items related to the current COVID-19 pandemic in additional to regular business. The two areas are outlined as follows:

COVID-19 Related Reports:

2020 final tax levy: A by-law was approved to provide for the final tax levy for 2020. Due to the current situation of COVID-19, the final tax levy due dates will be extended to July 31, 2020 and October 30, 2020.

Waiving of Penalties, interest, and fees (including property tax, water and wastewater and other accounts): Council authorized waiving of all penalties and interest on any overdue account balances through to and including June 30, 2020. Council also waived all returned cheque or electronic payment fees through to and including June 30, 2020.

Temporary suspension of minimum number of taxicabs for owners: Council approved a temporary amendment to Taxicab By-law 63-16. This change temporarily waives the requirement that every taxicab owner maintain a minimum of five taxicab licences. As many residents of the Municipality still rely on the use of taxicabs for transportation, it would not be reasonable to revoke a taxicab owner’s licence due to the reduction in the taxicab owner’s taxi fleet.

Limiting passengers in vehicles: Did not approve a by-law to temporarily limit passengers in taxicabs during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Regular Business Reports:

40-42 Mill Street West Parkette: Council approved the final design for the 40-42 Mill Street West Parkette. The Parkette will include some additional tables, chairs, bike racks, and some various plantings. Proposed overhead string lighting will be installed and will remain year round. The finishes will be consistent with Mill Street West.
