The newly reinvented Leamington Library opened its doors to the public today at 1 John Street.

Mayor Hilda MacDonald welcomed guests including the Minister of Transportation Caroline Mulroney, MPP Rick Nicholls, Essex County Warden Gary McNamara, Library Board Chair Nelson Santos, and past and present library staff members to tour the facility.

The Leamington Library has been expanded to 9200 square feet and redesigned to be an inviting community space, equipped to offer residents the opportunity to explore, create, imagine and learn.

Special features include:

  • Single study pods that provide space for small group and quiet study;
  • Social gathering areas that allow for collaborative learning;
  • A Maker Space with 3D printing, and a space that allows residents to try their hobby skills such as button making and vinyl cutting;
  • A music recording studio that supports sound exploration and music development; and
  • A video lab with photo and video editing technology allowing residents of all ages to explore the film making process.

The new features have been added specifically to provide residents expanded opportunities to develop a variety of literacy skills, whether it’s reading and writing, arts and culture, or digital competencies, all being essential skills in everyday interactions.

The Leamington Library continues to offer the traditional resources of books, magazines, newspapers and computer and Wi-Fi access.

“There has been much anticipation for this dynamic and innovative project,” said Mayor Hilda MacDonald. “It’s inspiring to see the Essex County Library and the Municipality of Leamington come together to create this accessible, functional and beautiful space,” added Mayor MacDonald. “We’ve done a lot of great things in Leamington but this is one of the pillars of our community.”

About the Leamington Library:

The Leamington Library has been located at the John and Erie Street location since 1912. The current building was constructed in the mid 1950’s, with an addition completed in 1974 bringing the facility to 7700 square feet in size. Major renovations to the library building over the last 25 years have been limited to upgrades to the programming room in 1990, renovating the interior in 1998, and the installation of a new roof in 2011.
