Municipality of Leamington Advances Environmental Initiatives Inspired by LDSS EcoTeam
A presentation by students from the Leamington District Secondary School (LDSS) EcoTeam has resulted in two new environmental initiatives being approved by the Municipality of Leamington.
At its June 9, 2026 meeting, Leamington Council approved the installation of public recycling options at six municipal locations and directed Administration to prioritize natural plantings over artificial turf in municipal rights-of-way and public parks. The decisions followed a presentation by the LDSS EcoTeam highlighting concerns about plastic pollution and microplastics in the environment.
Approximately 60 recycling bins will be installed throughout Seacliff Park, Rick Atkin Park, Waterfront Market Plaza, Kinsmen Ball Diamonds, Leamington Pure Flavor Soccer Complex, and Mersea Park. The initiative will make it easier for residents and visitors to recycle while helping reduce litter and waste in some of the Municipality's busiest outdoor spaces.
Council also approved a recommendation directing Administration to use natural plantings in place of artificial turf in municipal rights-of-way and public parks, supporting a more environmentally sustainable approach to municipal landscaping.
"The LDSS EcoTeam demonstrated how passionate and engaged young people can make a real difference in their community," said Mayor Hilda MacDonald. "Their presentation highlighted important environmental issues and proposed practical solutions. We are pleased to support these initiatives and recognize the positive impact youth can have on protecting our natural environment and shaping local decision-making."
The Municipality thanks the LDSS EcoTeam for its leadership, advocacy, and commitment to environmental stewardship. Their presentation helped advance practical initiatives that will expand recycling opportunities in municipal parks and recreational spaces while supporting more environmentally sustainable landscaping practices.
