Municipality of Leamington Encourages Safe Charging During Fire Prevention Week

During Fire Prevention Week™, October 4–10, the Municipality of Leamington is reminding residents that simple charging habits can help prevent lithium-ion battery fires.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme, “Charge into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” highlights how to safely use and charge the rechargeable batteries that power many everyday devices.

Phones, tablets, laptops, power tools, toys, e-bikes and e-scooters commonly use lithium-ion batteries. While these batteries are generally safe when used properly, damaged batteries or improper charging can cause them to overheat, catch fire or, in some cases, explode.

“Lithium-ion batteries are part of our everyday lives, and how we charge and care for them matters,” said Fire Chief Don Williamson. “A few simple habits, like using the correct charger, charging on a hard surface and watching for signs of battery damage, can significantly reduce the risk of fire.”

The Municipality encourages residents to follow these charging safety tips:

  • Use the right charger. Use the charging cord and equipment that came with the device or is approved by the manufacturer.

  • Charge on a hard, flat surface. Avoid charging devices on beds, couches, under pillows or anywhere heat can become trapped.

  • Watch for warning signs. Stop using a device or battery if it becomes unusually hot, changes shape, swells, leaks, smells strange or makes unusual noises.

  • Unplug when charging is complete. Avoid leaving devices plugged in longer than necessary.

  • Take extra care with larger batteries. E-bikes, e-scooters and power tools contain larger batteries that can produce intense fires if they fail. Charge them in a safe location away from exits and anything that can burn.

  • Never use damaged batteries or charging equipment. Replace batteries, cords or chargers that show signs of damage.

Fire Prevention Week is led by the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) and is observed each October to help people understand how they can prevent fires and stay safe. For more information about Fire Prevention Week, visit fpw.org.
