Municipality of Leamington Enhances Safety and Enforcement Measures at Waterfront
As part of its ongoing commitment to public safety and the enjoyment of its public spaces, the Municipality of Leamington is implementing new measures to address concerns related to noise, loitering, and disruptive activity in the waterfront and marina areas.
In May 2024, the Municipality established a Waterfront Committee, comprising residents, municipal officials, and members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). The Committee was formed in response to growing concerns about unsafe and disruptive behaviours, including street racing, excessive engine noise, and loitering in the area.
The waterfront and marina continue to be popular destinations for both residents and visitors. With this continued activity, the Municipality recognizes the importance of maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for all.
To help achieve this goal, the Municipality has taken several steps:
- The waterfront district has been designated a Community Safety Zone, to help protect pedestrians and cyclists and increasing fines for traffic violations.
- The Robson Road reconstruction project, which is nearing completion, includes traffic calming features to support pedestrian and cycling activities and deter speeding.
- The Leamington Marina parking lot has been redesigned to improve traffic flow, accessibility, and boat launch staging, including the relocation of the entrance across from Cherry Lane and the addition of more parking spaces.
Enhanced safety measures include upgraded lighting to improve evening visibility, the upcoming installation of surveillance cameras to support monitoring and enforcement and new signage outlining the following:- Parking permitted between 7:00 AM and 9:00 PM
- No loitering
- No excessive noise, tire squealing, or engine revving
- Enforcement under the Trespass to Property Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. T.21
The Ontario Provincial Police will be increasing their presence in the area to support these enforcement efforts and help ensure a safe and enjoyable waterfront experience for everyone.
“Leamington’s waterfront is a treasured community space,” said Mayor Hilda MacDonald. “Through the collaborative work of our Waterfront Committee and the support of our partners at the OPP, we’re taking proactive steps to protect this area and promote respectful use of our public amenities.”
