Accessibility Advisory Committee

The Accessibility Advisory Committee provides advice to Council on accessibility initiatives to address requirements under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA) in promoting accessibility for residents of all abilities.

The Leamington Accessibility Advisory Committee has established an annual Accessibility Award to be presented during National AccessAbility Week - May 31 to June 6, 2026. 

The Accessibility Award celebrates the outstanding achievements by individuals, businesses, community organizations and groups to improving awareness and understanding of accessibility and inclusion throughout the Municipality of Leamington.

The purpose of the Award is to promote accessibility and celebrate those in the community that have contributed to a barrier free Leamington.

The mandate of the LAAC is to provide advice to Council on accessibility initiatives to address requirements under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA) in promoting accessibility for residents of all abilities.

The LAAC Committee shall advise Council on improving opportunities for persons with disabilities by promoting the implementation of the Ontarians with Disabilities Act 2001, (ODA) and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005, (AODA) in the Municipality of Leamington which will assist the Municipality in reaching the goal of a barrier-free environment for its residents by 2025. The LAAC will achieve this primarily by advising Council each year, as required by the AODA, on its annual Accessibility Plan which will focus on the identification, removal and prevention of barriers to people with disabilities

The LAAC accomplishes its mandate and goal by:

a)        providing feedback on the Municipality’s multi-year accessibility plan and annual updates on accessibility initiatives to comply with the requirements of the AODA;

b)        participating in consultation requirements under the AODA;

c)         providing feedback on select site plan applications as described in section 41 of the Planning Act, as determined by the Municipality;

d)        creating an annual LAAC work plan; working to meet the objectives and reporting annually to Council on the committee’s achievements;

e)        promoting awareness of accessibility and inclusion; and

f)         seeking support and guidance where necessary from departments and other stakeholders.

 The membership of the Committee shall be comprised as follows:

  • One (1) member of Leamington Council;
  • One (1) member who is a professional from the community;
  • Three (3) members of the community who are people with disabilities.
