Mayor’s Recognition Awards

The Mayor’s Recognition Awards celebrate excellence in various aspects of community life, from athletics and innovation to volunteerism and youth leadership. The awards recognize those who have gone above and beyond to make Leamington a great place to live.

Award Categories

Eligibility: There may be more than one Athletics Award presented in a given year.

Criteria: The Athletics Award is designed to recognize individuals or groups who have excelled in their particular sport and have achieved one (1) or more of the following:

  • Placed first, second or third in a national championship
  • Placed first, second or third in a provincial championship
  • Been chosen to represent Ontario in a national competition
  • Been chosen to represent Canada in an international competition

Eligibility: The recipient must be twenty-one (21) years of age or less as of December 31 of the year for which the Award is given.

A youth shall not be eligible for an Outstanding Youth Award if the youth has been the recipient of an Award in the past three (3) years.  

Criteria: The Outstanding Youth Award is in recognition of outstanding achievement and volunteer contributions of a youth within their school or community in the areas of art/culture, literacy, humanitarianism, volunteerism, heroism, academics, the military, athletics, politics, or science and in consideration of the following:

  • length of service;
  • their demonstration of civic mindedness;
  • the benefits of their contributions to the community;
  • their service as a role model;
  • diversity of service; and
  • leadership. 

Eligibility: An individual or Group shall not be eligible for an Innovation Award if the individual or Group has been the recipient of an Award in the past three (3) years.

Criteria: The Innovation Award recognizes an individual or Group for innovative and outside-of-the-box ideas, research, technologies or processes which has brought recognition to the Municipality as a result.

Eligibility: An individual or Group shall not be eligible for a Distinguished Volunteer Service Award if the individual or Group has been the recipient of an Award in the past three (3) years.

Criteria: The Distinguished Volunteer Service Award shall recognize an individual or Group whose volunteer work has extended beyond the normal scope of their professional duties to:

  • make a significant impact and enhance the quality of life in Leamington; and/or
  • implement a significant positive change in the Municipality.

Eligibility: An individual or Group shall not be eligible for a Community Inspiration Award if the individual or Group has been the recipient of an Award in the past three (3) years. 

Criteria: The Community Inspiration Award recognizes an individual or Group who advocates or practices humane actions or had inspirational influence on others in the community and in particular those who have:

  • special or unique qualities that highlight how the person/Group has made a difference in the community;
  • leadership, dedication, innovation and creativity; and
  • made long-term benefits or impact within the Municipality.

Eligibility: The recipient of the Mayor’s Special Award does not need to be from nominations received. 

The Mayor's Special Award may not be presented each year.

There may be more than one (1) Mayor’s Special Award presented in a given year.

Criteria: The Mayor’s Special Award shall be presented to an individual or Group who have demonstrated humanitarianism and/or exceptional achievement and/or an act of heroism or bravery.

Recipients will be selected by the Mayor’s Recognition Awards Committee, except for the Mayor’s Special Award, which is personally chosen by Mayor MacDonald.

Honourees will be celebrated at a special Council meeting this spring, where their achievements will be formally recognized.

Winner Profiles

The 2025 Mayor's Recognition Awards Presentation took place at a Special Meeting of Council on Tuesday, July 22, 2025.

Please join us in congratulating the following 2025 winners: 

Outstanding Youth

Recipient: Lily Steinhoff

Lily is an exceptional young leader and passionate advocate for the Tourette syndrome community. As a trained Youth Ambassador and Rising Leader with the Tourette Association of America, she has advocated for increased funding by meeting with senators and representatives. A proud Canadian Ambassador for Tourette’s, she also supports local youth living with the condition. Lily’s commitment to service extends beyond advocacy; she actively volunteers with people of all ages, served on the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Committee in 2023, and was highly engaged in school through her participation in the student council, track, and competitive gymnastics. Whether championing a cause or lending a helping hand to neighbours, Lily leads with compassion, responsibility, and an unwavering drive to make a difference.

 

Distinguished Voluntary Service

Recipient: Kevin Gale

As President of the Leamington Minor Baseball Association for the past decade, Kevin has played a pivotal role in shaping the future of baseball in Leamington. Under his leadership, the association has become a model for Minor Baseball in Southwestern Ontario, with several players advancing to collegiate and semi-professional levels. Kevin’s dedication extends far beyond the field; he tirelessly manages administrative duties, stays up-to-date on evolving regulations, and ensures that coaches and teams have the support they need. Even after his own children graduated from the program, Kevin and his family have remained deeply committed, investing both their time and resources, including the establishment of a baseball training facility in uptown Leamington. Thanks to his unwavering service, the future of baseball in our community is strong and thriving.

Community Inspiration

Recipient: Warren Dunford

Warren is a true ambassador for Leamington, dedicating countless hours over the years to organizations such as the Leamington Minor Hockey, Minor Baseball, and the Sun Parlour Curling Club. Known for doing the behind-the-scenes heavy lifting, Warren brings heart and humour to everything he does, including the beloved, ever-changing messages he posts on the Leamington Curling Club sign, bringing smiles to passersby. Whether he's walking through town or spending time at the ball diamond, Warren is a familiar and uplifting presence whose warm spirit and community pride continue to inspire all who know him.

 

 

 

Mayor's Special Award

Recipient: Mark Ribble and Jerry Ribble

Mark and Jerry are being recognized for their unwavering dedication to honouring Canada’s veterans through the coordination of Leamington’s Remembrance Day Services and, notably, the launch of the Hometown Heroes Banner Project in 2019. Thanks to their leadership and community engagement, personalized banners featuring local veterans, including names, service eras, branches, ranks, and photos, are proudly displayed throughout uptown Leamington each fall. In 2024, 91 banners lined the streets, serving as a powerful tribute and reminder of the sacrifices made by those who served. Through their efforts, Mark and Jerry have strengthened our collective memory, deepened local pride, and ensured our Hometown Heroes are never forgotten.

Mayor's Special Award (Posthumously)

Recipient: Lorraine Gibson

Lorraine, born and raised in Montreal, brought a lifetime of compassion and community service to Leamington after settling here later in life. A dedicated advocate for guest workers, her work with the Migrant Worker Community Program and the South Essex Community Council (SECC) left a lasting impact on countless lives. While raising three children, Lorraine earned her law degree, demonstrating both determination and a deep commitment to justice. She was also an active member of Toastmasters and had a long-standing history of service with the Canadian Red Cross. In 2019, she received SECC’s Volunteer Change Maker Award in recognition of her tireless efforts and commitment to those most in need. Lorraine’s legacy of service and kindness continues to inspire our community.

Mayor's Special Award for Heroism

Recipient: Callahan and Lyla Kivell

Callahan Kivell and his sister Lyla are being recognized for their remarkable courage and quick thinking that saved a life on Lake Erie this summer. One evening, the two Leamington teens spotted a personal watercraft user struggling several hundred feet offshore as his vessel was sinking. Realizing the danger, Lyla immediately called 911 and alerted her brother, while Callahan grabbed life jackets and swam out to reach the man in distress. Thanks to their calm response, bravery, and lifeguard training from our very own Recreation Centre, the man is alive today. Callahan and Lyla’s actions are a powerful reminder of the impact of preparedness, community spirit, and true heroism.

 


Ontario Senior of the Year Award - Dr. Martin Girash

Recipient: Dr. Martin Girash

The Ontario Senior of the Year Award was presented to Dr. Martin Girash - a respected leader whose lifelong contributions to healthcare, education, and community service have left a lasting impact. From serving as President and CEO of Windsor Regional Hospital to Chair of the Erie St. Clair LHIN and the University of Windsor’s Board of Governors, Martin has dedicated himself to public service. More recently, he served on Leamington’s Seniors’ Advisory Committee, including as Chair. His work has been recognized with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, the SWOMEN Advancement of Medical Education Award, and the University of Windsor’s Clark Award. Martin continues to show that retirement is no barrier to making a meaningful difference in our community.

Distinguished Volunteer Service

Recipient: Bob Rumble

Bob has been a pillar of youth sports in our community, dedicating countless hours to coaching multiple teams simultaneously.

Bob's contributions to the Leamington Minor Soccer League are invaluable. In addition to his roles as a coach and board member, he selflessly volunteers as a canteen operator, ensuring the league operates smoothly on all fronts. Just last year, his leadership led the Leamington Lightning to a triumphant season, clinching the league championship with an impressive 10-0-1 record. His dedication and passion for youth sports have inspired a new generation of athletes in our community. 

Bob embodies kindness, compassion, and empathy, making him an inspiring role model for the youth and fellow volunteers. His dedication and positive influence have significantly enriched our community, making him a deserving recipient of this award.

Mayor's Award for Community Inspiration

Recipient: St. John the Evangelist, Anglican Church

The unwavering dedication and compassion of the volunteers of St. John the Evangelist, Anglican Church have made a profound impact on the Leamington community.

St. John’s Anglican Church volunteers prepare and distribute meals every Wednesday, ensuring no one goes hungry. In addition to providing meals, they offer clothing items at no cost, demonstrating their commitment to serving those in need with dignity and respect. In 2023 alone, St. John’s provided just under 9,600 meals to the community, operating as a crucial food pantry and delivering sustenance to the Homeless Hub and the former Leamington Lodge.

The church's efforts extend beyond food. Through the Community Clothing Cupboard and Warming Cross, they supply essential clothing items to those who need them most. Their work supports some of the most vulnerable members of our community, including the unhoused, seniors, and new Canadians. St. John’s collaborates closely with other local organizations to amplify their impact and reach.

The selfless dedication of St. John’s volunteers exemplifies the spirit of community service and inspires us all. We are deeply grateful for their tireless efforts to uplift and support our community.

Mayor's Special Award for Innovation

Recipient: John Moran

John Moran’s visionary leadership has helped transform Leamington's waterfront into a vibrant hub of cultural activity.

John reimagined the concept of concerts at Leamington’s Amphitheatre, creating the highly successful Onthe42 Summer Concert Series. These free community concerts appeal to diverse age groups and cultures by showcasing an impressive variety of musical genres. John's innovative approach has fostered a strong sense of community among attendees, making the waterfront venue a beloved gathering place.

As the past president and current board of directors member of The Bank Theatre, John has tirelessly championed local artists, providing them with platforms to display their talents. Simultaneously, he has attracted renowned performers like Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy, enriching the cultural fabric of our community.

This year, John is not only spearheading our summer concert series but also leading the events and concerts for the Leamington 150th Anniversary Celebration. His dedication and creativity have left an indelible mark on Leamington, making him a deserving recipient of this award.

Mayor's Special Award

Recipient: Michelle Fortier

Michelle Fortier has made extraordinary contributions to the performing arts in Leamington, particularly at The Bank Theatre.

Michelle recognized the need for a community theatre and played a pivotal role in revitalizing the Bank Theatre, helping to transform it into an accessible and vibrant space for both residents and visitors. Her efforts have fostered a strong sense of community by providing a venue for diverse programming and a platform for community actors to develop and showcase their talents. This initiative has enriched the cultural heritage of Leamington, creating lasting memories for all who attend.

In addition to her work with The Bank Theatre, Michelle is a passionate advocate for Leamington. Currently, she plays a key role in planning, organizing and promoting events for the Leamington 150th anniversary celebration, lending her expertise and creativity to ensure its success.

Michelle’s dedication and vision have profoundly impacted our community. Her contributions and unwavering commitment have enriched the cultural landscape of Leamington.

Mayor's Special Award (Posthumously)

Recipient: Evelyn Miller

Evelyn Jean Miller, affectionately known as “Evie” passed away on March 24, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering service and kindness.

Evelyn dedicated many years to Leamington, embodying the spirit of community service. Known for her fierce loyalty, kindness, and warm-hearted nature, she was always there for those in need, offering support, a warm smile, and a comforting presence. Her motto, "Please don’t wait to be kind," perfectly encapsulates how she lived her life.

For 40 years, Evelyn volunteered with Erie Shores Hospice, providing compassionate care and support to countless individuals and families. As a long-standing member of the Leamington United Church, she was deeply involved in both local and international missions, demonstrating her commitment to helping others on a broader scale.

While we often recognize those who contribute in visible and grand ways, it is the quiet, steadfast service of individuals like Evelyn that truly enriches our communities. Her long-term dedication and selfless contributions have made Leamington a better place, often without seeking or receiving recognition.

Evelyn leaves behind a legacy of service, compassion, and unwavering commitment to our community.
